4 Steps to Great Telecommuting Resume Writing

There has definitely been an increase in the number of telecommuting jobs over the years. While most employers still require their workers to come to their establishment to work, some are allowing employees to work from home. Then there are othersĀ that only offer stay-at-home positions.

If you're lucky enough to snag one of these positions, you will benefit greatly from the comfort of working from home, a more flexible schedule, and even major savings in gas costs. However, many are competing against you for the same position, which means it will take some crafty resume writing to get the job. How can you do it? Here are 5 steps to get you started.

1. Create a Great Objective

Since your objective is what introduces the prospective employer to who you are and what you're looking for, it needs to be stellar. It doesn't hurt to stretch your objective out beyond one sentence to tell the employer what you want in a job while keeping it brief and interesting. In a pool of sharks vying for the same prey, you need to be the biggest and toughest in the water, so as you write take special care to make your objective stand out above the rest.

2. Write an Impressive Summary about Yourself

Of course, the summary is a great place to give snapshot bullet points about what makes you the best for the position you're applying for (highly organized, fast worker, etc.). However, because a telecommuting job requires specific qualities (the ability to work alone, being self-motivated and excellent with deadlines) its good to highlight what makes you right for not just the position, but telecommuting work in general.

3. Include Plenty of Keywords

Because a telecommuter's resume is Internet-based, it's important that you're extremely sensitive to the keywords you choose to include. Many large (and some smaller) employers have resume scanning programs that help to determine your eligibility before anyone actually reads it. So as you're choosing words to describe yourself, it's good to make sure to include every software program you know could qualify you for the job (including freeware). The more keywords you list, the greater your chances will be of being considered.

4. The Remaining Kitchen Sink

So you know that you still need to include your employment history, education and interests. Your job is to align them all with the position you're applying for. But again, keep in mind that you need special qualities to work from home, so as you're pulling from the grab bag of interesting information about yourself, take time to consider whether your choices prove that you're completely right for the job.

The great news is that plenty of telecommuting jobs are popping up every day, so if you are diligent in your job search, you should be able to snagĀ a legitimate work-from-home that you'll absolutely love.
