How to Avoid Simple Mistakes on Your Resume
Sometimes the simplest errors can cause the biggest problems for your job search. For instance, no matter how many great skills you have, if your resume has a lot of typos, you will probably have a difficult time getting anyone to take it seriously.
The good news is that it's easy to avoid the simple mistakes on your resume. Of course, you could get professional resume writing guidance. But if you're doing your own legwork, here are some tips to remember.
Don't Rely On Spell Check
One mistake many job seekers make when writing their own resume is relying on spell check as the final editor. While spell check does catch a lot of errors, it very often does not catch context issues. For instance, you could spell a word correctly but use it in the wrong context.
Have a Friend Proofread
To avoid the spell check issue, it's a great idea to have a friend proofread your resume after you've gone through the spell check process. Again, spell check is not going to catch everything and you don't want anything to slip past you, so before submitting your resume, take time to have a friend read it over to catch the errors you and spell check have missed.
Keep It Simple
Sometimes you want to impress hiring managers with your fantastic vocabulary. But if you're not careful, you could find yourself using the wrong big words at the wrong time, accomplishing the opposite of your original goal. A good way around this is to keep your resume as simple as possible. Getting to the point and keeping it there is a great way to avoid making mistakes.
If you feel confident that your resume is in good shape before sending it off then great! But it's good to follow the above tips before doing so to avoid being unnecessarily overlooked in your job search.
