Turn Negative Resume Feedback Into a Positive

So you've worked your fingertips to the bone typing out this great resume. You've handed it over to your mentor for feedback and when you got it back, your mentor alluded to the fact that you might want to get professional resume help rather than doing the work yourself.

Having decided that you want to go at it alone, you feel a bit discouraged by this suggested. However, there's no need to feel bad. Instead, you could turn your negative feedback into a positive. Here are a few ways to get this done...

Don't Just Tuck Your Tail, Ask Questions

When you receive your feedback, you may feel overwhelmed by what you read and feel that you've failed. But just because the mentor has given you the feedback with a sense of authority doesn't mean he or she shouldn't be held accountable for the feedback.

In other words, ask questions to help clarify what it is that the feedback is telling you to do. By doing this, you may find that some of the "set-in-stone" feedback is more flexible than you think.

Don't Undermine Your Own Wisdom

It may feel a little bit intimidating for someone who you consider to be your mentor to tell you that the work you've put into your resume isn't good enough. However, it's important to keep in mind that your personal wisdom is by no means useless.

In fact, you've brought a lot of knowledge to the table, so rather than scrapping your resume, it's good to take the good pointers from the mentor and also keep your wisdom in the equation. This way, you don't undermine your own wisdom while taking someone else's advice.

Feel Good about What You're Doing

Always remember that your job is to snag a job first, not feel bad about yourself for receiving negative feedback. So if you've received negative feedback, take the good from it and leave the bad behind. You're trying to do a good thing by getting a job and that's something to feel good about.

So are you ready to get your resume writing in gear? Well, you've already taken the first step by writing the resume and getting some valuable feedback. Now it's time to revise it, get some more feedback then send it on its way. With all of the work you've put into your resume, it will undoubtedly get you the job you want in due time.
