Writing a Resume for a Seasonal or Summer Job
Now that the summer is officially around the corner, you may want to see if you can pick up a second job to bring in some extra cash. But before you dive in and start applying for jobs, it’s good to know that seasonal employers typically look for slightly different qualifications than those who are higher for the long-term. Here are some ideas that you might want to remember as you’re writing your resume so that you can make sure to address employers’ needs with each application.
Employers Are Looking for Fast Learners
One major quality that employers are looking for in summer candidates or those applying during the holiday season is that they can learn fast and come bearing tons of knowledge. So your job is to then show in your resume that you’ve been able to dive into a job and get started with little-to-know training.
You could highlight this in a specific section of your resume that addresses your overall qualifications or you could mention in under some of your specific jobs. If you don’t know how to get this done one your own, you could find resume writers to help you spell this out.
You Need to Show That You Are Available
Another major factor in hiring short-term help is making sure candidates will be available. For instance, if you currently work a full-time job, you may not have the availability of a person who is currently unemployed or may be off for the summer (ex. teacher).
If a major requirement for the job is being available on weekends then make sure you are abundantly clear that you’re available during this time. If you don’t, you may be better qualified for a position than your competition but still get overlooked due to your perceived scheduling conflicts.
In addition to being highly-qualified for the job, it’s important to address the concerns of employers looking for short-term assistance. If you can show this, as well as prove that you learn fast and have the availability that the employer is looking for, you could increase your chances of getting hired for the position.
