Writing Your Resume for a Tough Economy

There's no doubt that we're in the midst of a tough economy. And while some say that the end of the recession came and went officially in June 2009, we are still seeing job seekers struggle to find employment. If you are in the middle of a job search and are finding that things aren't getting easier for you, take a look at some tips to help you write a winning resume that may give you some headway during these challenging times.

Customize Your Resume

Many resume writing guides agree that one of the biggest rules of thumb when writing a serious resume--one that will get you noticed--is to make sure that it is tailored to each company you're applying with. Sometimes it's common for job seekers to send out "cookie cutter" resumes because so many get sent every day. But employers know when you're sending them something that looks like a template.

So instead of sending out the same resume each time while only changing a few minor details, take time to create a new resume for each company that is tailored to their needs. This could help your resume stand out from the rest.

Show That You've Made a Difference

Another great way to make your resume stand out is to show how you've made a difference with previous employers. This comes with writing action statements, rather than a list of responsibilities. Sure your employer gave you a list of duties to accomplish, but to show the prospective employer you're one of a kind, it's good to focus on accomplishments that show your leadership skills.

What did you start, manage and finish and how did you do it? How did your contributions make a difference to the company? Including this type of information will help employers understand how you could improve their companies, which is ultimately what they're looking for.

Don't Forget Your Cover Letter

Whether a job posting asks for a cover letter or not, it's good to include one to add depth to your application and showcase more accomplishments. This is the place where you can really shine because you have a chance to speak from your personal voice. In most situations, you should not hesitate to send one, unless, that is, the employer specifically asks you not to.

We may no longer be in the midst of an official recession, but the residual effects will likely be present for some time. So as you compete with tons of other job seekers for the same position, it's good to do all you can to make sure you stand out.
